How To Adjust Draw Weight On A Compound Bow
For years, humans have engaged in the activity of archery as a skill of hunting, warfare, and sport. The advancement in technology has led to different designs and the production of bows that can shoot for far range with almost 100% accuracy.
With the technique and accuracy that goes into shooting a bear compound bow, you must adjust the bow to meet your specific attributes.
To adjust the draw length on a bear compound bow involves the use of a bow press. However, this adjustment can still be done without the use of a bow press.
Now, the questions springing out; what is a bow press, and how can draw length be adjusted without it?
According to Shooting Time, "a bow press is a mechanical press which flexes the bow's limbs to take tension off the bowstring and cable(s) so maintenance can be performed."
And this leads us to the second question raised, which is, "how can draw length be adjusted without a bow press?"
Simple, the draw length is adjusted to fit your arm length and posture because it's used to achieve maximum drawback in ensuring a long and smooth shot.
Soo let's discuss how to adjust the draw length on a bear compound bow.
Bear Archery Compound Bow: The Beginning
Fred Bear started the Bear Archery, a man born and raised in Pennsylvania and. He is known as a pioneer of bowhunting and in the 1940's he had the patent rights to a shooting glove and quiver.
With the tradition left behind by Fred Bear, Bear Archery is still in the business of designing and producing quality compound bows.
Currently, they feature thirteen compound bow models of 345 fps to 290 fps (feet per second) with different draw lengths each.
Draw Length and Draw Weight: What are They?
For you to use the bear compound bow effectively, there are two different measurements you must know: draw length and draw weight.
The draw weight will be explained with this simple illustration below.
When you go to the gym with the focus on strength training (weight lifting), you either do the shoulder press biceps or the lap pulldowns. You do this to reduce your weight to the point you desire.
This is the same thing that happens with the draw weight. Your weight can either be increased or decreased when the draw weight is adjusted using the bolts.
To shoot your bow easily is known as less weight, and with more weight increase it becomes more difficult to shoot your bow.
This means, to adjust your draw weight effectively, you must consider the size of your body because it's adjusted to what you can handle.
What is the draw length?
Draw length has to do with your aiming and shooting, that's pulling the arrow back to the point where you can't go any further and shooting.
This clearly shows that your body size determines your draw length and that's what makes archery a special sport because of the interaction between you and the equipment.
To shoot with accuracy, use one within the range of your draw length because the longer the drawn length, the longer the bear compound bow would be, the faster the speed of your arrow.
Well, understand that the draw length of traditional longbows and recurve bows are impressive. How? You can draw them back as far as you want.
However, the mechanically engineered compound bows, including those designed by Bear Archery can only drawback based on two things:
First, the size of the compound bow.
Second, the draw weight of it.
And this is determined by the manufacturer, which means you can't pull back when the bow stops. These bows are designed to be pulled back fully to the stop point because without them you won't be able to shoot. This will lead us to the reason for this article:
Adjusting the Draw Length on a Bear Compound Bow: Is it Possible?
The answer is YES. It's possible to adjust the draw length but the mistake some archers make is to overdraw their bear compound bow, and this is the mistake you must avoid.
Because it will not only hurt you but prevent you from shooting as a result of sore muscles. And your bow will be damaged because it was designed for a specific range of draw length.
As you grow taller or add weight, your arm span gets wider, and to continue using the same bare compound bow, then your draw length needs to be replaced with a different one. This means new cams have to be purchased, ones designed for your draw length range.
There are different types of cams with slightly different features:
- Adjustable cams
- Modular cams
- And draw length-specific cams.
Once the cams have been purchased, a bow press will be needed to replace them. You have to put your bow in the press with both cams and risers directed towards you. Next, you unstring the bow and remove both the control cable(s) and the bus cable together.
You loosen the bolts on the old cams carefully with your Allen or hexagon wrench. You will then lift the cams from the risers gently. Following the manufacturer's instructions, place the new cams on the risers and then tighten the bolts.
When you're done with it, unstring your bow and it's good to be used.
Conclusion
A long draw length can be the best for someone but it doesn't necessarily mean it's the best for you. What matters is that you work with a bear compound bow that its draw length range fits your body size and you're comfortable shooting it.
